How Do You Prevent a Vaginal Yeast Infection?

Vaginal yeast infections are very unpleasant to have to deal with, and unfortunately are very common. But there are measures you can take to prevent them from ever happening, or from stopping a re-occurrence. Though following these steps does not guarantee you will never suffer from a vaginal yeast infection again, it will help lower your risks.

  1. Wear cotton underwear. It is a material that allows the skin to breathe and therefore means the region is less damp than when you wear nylon or Lycra.
  2. Avoid perfumed products, such as pads or tampons, bath products, laundry detergents and so on. They can upset the vagina’s natural flora balance.
  3. Try not to wear pantyhose, tight pants or leotards every day.
  4. Do not douche. It is a practice that needs to only be done when on the advice of a doctor. Otherwise you are destroying that good bacteria that you need to fight the yeast.
  5. Use water based lubricants during sexual intercourse not petroleum based.
  6. To avoid the yeast from the intestinal tract being transferred to the vagina wipe front to back.
  7. Dry thoroughly after showering or bathing – try using a blow dryer on a low cool setting.
  8. Do not linger, or sunbathe in wet swimsuits. Change into dry clothing as soon as possible.
  9. Avoid scented or colored toilet paper.
  10. Avoid hot tubs.
