A yeast infection is an infection that can occur when there is an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans in your body. Most people carry this fungus around living in them but it is harmless while kept at low numbers by good bacteria and your immune system. If something upsets your body’s balance it causes an overgrowth. There are several thing that can cause this to happen, antibiotics, diabetes, poor diet, clothing, a weakened immune system and more. There are also hormonal causes of yeast infections which are particularly an issue for women, as they have so many hormonal times in their life like menstruation every month and then pregnancies.
A yeast infection will happen wherever it is warm, dark and moist. Mouth, vagina, under folds of skin, breasts if breast feeding, under arm, penis and so on. It is not limited to just women but women are more likely to suffer through it than men. Symptoms include itching, pain or discomfort, swelling, redness, discharge.
When pregnant or menstruating, a woman has a lot more hormones being released in her body and this upsets the balance. During pregnancy it is the third trimester a woman is more likely to have a yeast infection and it is important to get it diagnosed and then giving advice on treatment by a doctor, as some over the counter treatments may not be safe for the baby.
Pregnancy and menstruation are not the only hormonal causes of yeast infection though. Stress is another factor. When a person is stressed the adrenals make a hormone called cortisol which is anti inflammatory. It breaks down tissues to make sure the organs and muscles get the proteins and nutrients ans sugars they need. Another chemical is also released to balance the cortisol and that is called Dhea. All of this can make your immune system weaker and also increases levels of sugar in your body which the fungus feeds on. Cortisol also can kill the good bacteria that is there controlling the growth of the fungus.
If you are a woman undergoing hormone therapy you may also be more at risk for a yeast infection. HRT creates an imbalance between progesterone and estrogen which can upset the good bacteria and therefore lead to a yeast infection.
Though there are several causes of yeast infections as you can see for women hormonal causes of yeast infection are one of the main factors.
