Can I Chew Sugarless Gum on a Candida Diet?

Though the question may specify looking at sugarless gum on a candida diet in fact the answer to this covers any kind of ‘sugar free’ or ‘diet’ foods such as diet sodas, that a person may naturally presume is safe to consume on a candida diet – but it is in fact not. Sugarless gum on a candida diet is not allowed because though it may be sugar free, it like other diet products still has preservatives and chemicals added, all a big no for a candida diet, and in particular the sweetener Aspartame.

  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
  • White flour, refined or non-whole grain flour products
  • Preservatives such as BHA & BHT
  • Propyl gallate, a preservative found in mayo, oil, baked goods, dried meats etc.
  • Highly saturated animal fat products, including dairy
  • Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)
  • Non-fermented soy, such as soy milks, soy protein, some tofu, etc.
  • Sugar alcohols like sorbitol, mannitol, etc.
  • Sulfites like sulfur dioxide and sodium bisulfate
  • Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate
  • Potassium bromate

While this list includes sugar alcohols like mannitol and sorbitol there may be one sugar alcohol that is worth further investigations, Xylitol.

What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is also a sugar alcohol sweetener but is not like the other 2 on the banned to eat candida diet plan! It can be found in vegetables, fruits and nuts and is basically as sweet as sucrose but with a third less calories. It was discovered in the late 19th century in both Germany and France and became popular for diabetics to use in Europe as it does not impact insulin levels. It is safer for diabetics than sugar because it has a lower impact on a persons blood sugar levels and has a low glycemic index.

Around the world Xylitol is used as a sweetener in pastilles, toothpaste and chewing gum.
