Lamisil Terbinafine For Candida

Terbinafine is its generic name and Lamsil is its brand name. It is an anti-fungal medication particularly used to treat fungal infections of the finger or toe nails, and can also be used to treat children with fungal infection of the scalp hair follicles in children 4 years or older. It works by affecting the fungal cell membrane leading to a deficiency in ergosterol which leads to cell death. It can be taken as a pill, spray or used in cream form. When taken orally it is usually for the treatment of dermatophyte fungi or teneal skin infections. When used topically as a cream it can be prescribed for Trichophyton, tinea and Candida skin infections.

Precautions for using Lamisil (Terbinafine) for candida

  • Oral administration should be used in patients with liver dysfunction or impaired renal function
  • Keep away from children
  • Terbinafine cream and spray should be used externally only
  • Use the spray with caution in patients with lesions
  • No known adverse effects on pregnant but clinical experience is limited so Lamisil (Terbinafine) for candida should be avoided
  • Breastfeeding women taking oral treatment should stop nursing, but the cream or spray forms are only absorbed into the skin in small amounts so are safe
  • Can interact with some other medications so discuss with your doctor

Dose of Lamisil (Terbinafine) for candida
Adults taking the tablets usually take 250mg a day unless dose is reduced because of other health issues. The cream for candida is used once or twice a day. Before applying make sure the area is clean and dry, and use in a thin layer rubbing it in lightly. Improvement may start after a week but treatment can continue for 2 to 4 weeks. Symptoms may be relived after a few days but the course of treatment should be continued until complete otherwise the candida skin infection may return.

Side effects or allergies of using Lamisil (Terbinafine) for candida
In clinical trials of the pill, 10.4% of patients had adverse events of which 5% were mild to moderate gastrointestinal problems, 3% were skin problems and the rest nonspecific. For the cream 1.8% has adverse reactions and 4.3% for the spray, none required patients to stop using it. Allergic reactions or side effects include;

  • hives
  • swelling of the face, throat, lips, tongue
  • difficulty breathing
  • liver damage
  • Nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach pain
  • clay colored stools
  • dark urine
  • itching
  • jaundice
  • joint pain and or swelling
  • swollen glands
  • patchy skin color
  • fever
  • chills
  • flu symptoms
  • body aches
  • weight loss
  • changes in vision
  • sore throat
  • headaches
  • blistering, peeling, red skin rash or
  • flaky, scaly, itchy skin rash
  • heartburn
  • diarrhea
  • fatigue
  • cold symptoms
  • unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • decreased taste

If you experience any side effects or allergic reactions call your doctor straight away or seek emergency medical help. You may need to take regular blood tests and have your liver function tested regularly. If used for nails it can take several months before they return to normal.
