Micafungin is developed under the brand name Mycamine by the company Astellas Pharma. It was approved for US use by the FDA in 2005 and by the European Union in 2008. An anti-fungal drug, Micafungin for candida is administered intravenously and is part of the echinocandin group of drugs. As with the other echinocandins Micafungin for candida kills the fungi by restricting the fungi’s cell production of 1,3-beta-D-glucan which is an essential part of the cells wall. Decreased glucan means the cell wall is weakened, becomes unstable and it dies.
