Jock itch refers to an inflammation of the groin area, more common in men, though it can occur in women too. There are several causes of jock itch, depending on what type it is, fungal or bacterial or just skin irritation. It is important to know what type of jock itch you have because treatment for one type will not help with the other. Causes of jock itch include;
- contact with fungus and yeasts
- tight clothing and underwear that trap in sweat
- moisture, warmth, and skin friction or chaffing in the groin folds
- contact with bacteria
People more prone to jock itch are men, diabetics who do not control their blood sugar levels, obese, and those with weakened immune systems. Diet does not seem to be a factor. Other risk factors include;
- excess sweating
- athlete’s foot infection or other “ringworm” on the body.
