The vaginal yeast infection is the most common form of yeast infection. The vagina has a balance of microorganisms that includes a small amount of yeast and friendly bacteria. When the balance is disturbed the yeast is able to multiply and causes a yeast infection. The most common candida species that causes a vaginal yeast infection is Candida albicans. There are several triggers that can lead to an imbalance in the vaginal flora, some of the causes of a vaginal yeast infection include;
- Antibiotics – prolonged use of antibiotics can lead to yeast infections. They kill all bacteria good and bad, which leads to the imbalance discussed above.
- Steroids
- Uncontrolled diabetes – yeast feeds on sugar and so uncontrolled diabetes leaves a person with high blood sugar levels.
- Weak immune system caused by a disease like HIV or AIDS, or by treatments like chemotherapy or certain drugs.
- Douching – upsets the vaginal environment and can kill good bacteria.
- Scratches or damage to the vagina – caused by sex when there is not enough lubrication, inserting tampons and so on.
- Underwear that is too tight or made of synthetic materials that keeps the region sweaty and irritated.
- Hormonal changes such as menopause, pregnancy, menstruation.
- Birth control pills also upset the hormonal balance.
- Hormone therapy.
