Throat Yeast Infection

Nearly all yeast infections are caused by the same fungus, Candida Albicans. It lives naturally on the body usually in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as other moist and warm areas, like the genitals, the mouth and throat. Usually these micro-organisms do no harm and their growth is kept under control by a healthy immune system and good bacteria. But if something happens to alter that balance, weaken the immune system or kill the good bacteria, the fungus will overgrow and that leads to a yeast infection.

Usually a throat yeast infection happens when you have Thrush (oral yeast infection) and the problem spreads back to the throat. Throat infections are more common in the young, children and infants, where the immune system is not yet fully developed. Adults with weakened immune systems are also more at risk including those with HIV or AIDs. Diabetics, patients taking chemotherapy or those on prolonged courses of antibiotics are also more likely to get a yeast infection.

A throat yeast infection can also be gotten from having oral sex with an infected partner. If your partner has a penile yeast infection, or if female has a vaginal yeast infection, and you perform oral sex on them it is possible to get a mouth and or throat yeast infection. If both of you do not get treated you can keep reinfecting each other each time you perform oral sex. It is best to abstain until treatment is successful.

Throat Yeast Infection Symptoms
Symptoms are similar to that of Thrush, white patches, lesions and pain when swallowing. There may be a burning sensation in the throat and sometimes at first the throat yeast infection can be confused with a sore throat. Redness and swelling may also be evident. Other symptoms on top of those can include upset stomach, fever, vomiting and cold hands and feet.

Throat Yeast Infection Treatment
It is important to visit a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. He or she may analyze throat scrapings, but they are more likely to recognize it from just looking. Treatment involves anti-fungal medications that you can take in either lozenge, pastille or oral suspension form. They are meant to be held in the mouth for a period before swallowing so that they can attack the yeast in that area. There are also home remedies that some people turn to including plain live yogurt, raw garlic, buttermilk and apple cider vinegar.

In general a throat yeast infection is one of the rare forms of this fungal infection. To prevent it make sure you treat Thrush as soon as you notice it so it cannot spread and work on doing what you can to keep your immune system as strong as possible. A healthy diet, plenty of sleep, managing stress, are all ways to do this as well as adding supplements to your routine such as probiotics. Also avoid gargling with mouthwash as tempting as that may be. The chemicals in it will kill the good bacteria which are needed to fight the fungus that caused the throat yeast infection.
